Man arrested in connection to string of car burglaries in Bath Submitted by Around Town Web... on Friday, January 22nd, 10:02 pm BATH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Bath Police have arrested 31-year-old John Foster at his home on Floral Street after serving four outstanding warrants from the Portland Police for multiple burglaries and theft related crimes. Police say Foster has been linked to the several car burglaries that have occurred in Bath over the past several weeks. On Thursday at around 1:30 p.m. Bath police officers received a report of a vehicle near the Cabin Restaurant that was vandalized; the window smashed and property taken from the interior of the vehicle. Sgt. Dan Couture and Officer Brett McIntire responded and were able to interview witnesses and eventually identified a vehicle that was seen fleeing the scene. Police discovered the vehicle was registered to Foster. City staff found the wheel while cleaning out the basement of City Hall. They called Nathan Lipfert, the senior curator at the Maine Maritime Museum. "I thought we should look into it, and so that's what we're trying to do," said Lipfert. "Nobody at the City Hall remembers how this came into the building there." Lipfert said it looks like a steering wheel from a World War II destroyer. He said it is identical in every detail to the ones installed on Allen M. Sumner class destroyers, like the ones built at Bath Iron Works. The wheel sits on its original pedestal, with its gyro-compass repeater and the rudder indicator. The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, which manages the Amtrak Downeaster, has already started work on the 650-foot by 70-foot building. The project received its long- debated storm water permit in early October, but the Brunswick West Neighborhood Coalition appealed that permit. The Coalition says the Maine DEP didn't follow the proper process for the permit, and claims data and designs for the project are inadequate. The neighbor group says there will be too much water coming from the building, and argues it will spread contamination in the area. The Coalition made its case Thursday in an appeal to the Board of Environmental Protection. Rafael Peralta DDG 115, a new navy ship constructed at Bath Iron Works. The ship is named for United States Marine Sergeant Rafael Peralta, who immigrated to the United States from Mexico, according to the United States Navy. On the same day he earned his green card, Peralta enlisted in the Marines, according to the Navy. The DDG 115 is the 35th Arleigh Burk Class missile destroyer built by Bath Iron Works employees. It is the 65th ship of its class. "It's easy to see that she is like the Marine for which she is named: proud, fearless, and strong," said Vice Admiral Robin Braun, the Chief of Navy Research. Camden's dam agent, David Bolstridge, says the lake water level is about 31 inches below normal. The Megunticook River, which flows out of the lake through two dams, is running at the lowest allowable water level. That's all because the area has received very little rain since the end of June.
